Even the least artistic among us can have the coolest pumpkins in the neighborhood this year with Dremel's carving kit. It's a neat, buzzy little unit that carves off layers of pumpkin flesh to let the light glow through. It isn't meant to cut all the way through the pumpkin, and the effect is perfectly spooky. Powered by two AA batteries, it's got two speeds for superior pumpkin-stock removal, at 6,000 and 12,000 rpm, so it's not a child's toy. Here's how the process goes: Cut a lid in the pumpkin the old-fashioned way and scoop out all the innards, leaving smooth, 1/2-inch thick walls. Stick the template to your pumpkin with spray-on craft adhesive and start tracing the design with the Dremel on the low setting. For larger areas, switch to high. The only trick is trying to remove the same amount of material on all the cuts so the light glows uniformly from inside the pumpkin. It takes just a little getting used to, and after a practice pumpkin, those snaggle-toothed Jack-o'-lanterns with the crooked mouths will be a thing of the past on your porch. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

I have used this tool and won the pumpkin carving contest last year - having carved out the entire seattle skyline (including the space needle) with this. Love it.
 Not impressed
I should be the ideal user of this tool; I've been making translucent pumpkin carvings for years. Until now, I've done so by hand, chipping and peeling off bits of pumpkin rind with a razorblade. It's a labor-intensive project, but the effect really is cool. So I was very enthusiastic when I heard about the Dremel carver, which promised to make this much easier.
Unfortunately, the result is just a lot of pumpkin mush. You cannot carve fine detail with this tool, and although it's safer than a razor blade I still don't think it's appropriate for children to carve with. The tool is heavy and awkward, and I needed to stop often to wipe away the pulped pumpkin. Even when I relegated it to its most appropriate task, thinning large areas of pumpkin rind, it wasn't a whole lot more effective or all that much easier than hand-peeling. At times it was useful for deepening peeled areas that weren't glowing enough, but for the price, I was not impressed. Next Halloween, this tool will be a little-used accessory.
